Traditionally, publishers and literary agents have controlled the publication of books with an iron fist. The phrase ‘closed shop’ doesn’t come close! Year after year, aspiring authors have been told that the odds against their miserable offerings getting into print are about 1000 to 1.
One avenue left open after trying to break down that seemingly impregnable wall, is to self-publish or go the so-called ‘vanity’ publishing route viz. pay someone to get the work into print. Then the ‘doom & gloom’ merchants chime in again. You’ll be lucky to sell 50 copies to family & friends; the odds are against you breaking even on the money you laid out; the quality of product is sketchy unless you pay through the nose; the list is long and all pretty negative!
